Shannon and I selected four new shows as candidates to our DVR lineup! Here are the reviews!
The Event
“Too soon?” Is it too soon to delve in to another series that is fueled by creating mystery and an onslaught of new questions each week? I can’t rightly say yet. Maybe after I have decided to rewatch LOST in its entirety, and have nothing else to watch.
Don’t judge a show by its pilot. But we must judge a show by its pilot. This show’s pilot succeeded in peeking my interest enough to a second episode, and I wasn’t pointing to the screen saying that was stupid, even when there was a plane “crashing” in the pilot episode. The only character in The Event that mattered to me was John Ritter’s son Jason (Sean Walker), who is obviously one of the central characters, and he did very well. The plot line was interesting, not the new African-American president wanting to close the doors of a secret prison facility-WHATTHEWHAT! I am a sucker for these types of shows, but I know they will usually rise to greatness, especially after season 2, if they ever make it that far, more than likely they will tank, i.e. FlashForward. FF had a great debut, but it became a lame duck. Whomever these folks are, that have been detained in Alaska, I’m ready for more. DVR Letter Grade at bottom of post!
Hawaii Five-O
Shannon and I kept saying it, its almost like a movie, a 44 minute movie, that tries to pack in entirely too much, albeit still entertaining. We liked this pilot, we just hope CBS doesn’t screw with the characters too much, too early. We are afraid the original CSI, which we are a good season behind, has “jumped the shark“. Hawaii shows are good, LOST, Dog the Bounty Hunter, Charlie’s Angels, Magnum P.I., I can go on . . .Lilo & Stitch: The Series – jk. Just don’t make Hawaii the main character, we don’t have cable anymore, so no more travel shows for us, World’s Best Beaches! C’mon!
All four main characters worked for me, they all played their roles to where you wanted more. Plot, well I don’t want to ring in the Irish weapons smuggler in Hawaii was a joke as a bad guy in a pilot, but it was. I will say, from beginning to the last 2 minutes, was so freaking fun to watch. Action + Comedic Wit = JJ Abrams new show UnderCovers, oh wait. Oh yea, the last 2 minutes, never end pilots where you are on the edge of your seat the whole episode, then the four main characters who just met, are acting like they have been together for years drinking a beer, laughing it up. It didn’t leave us hanging on to what could be next. DVR Letter Grade at bottom of post!
UnderCovers
It was Mr. & Mrs. Smith. And not that they’re just both super spies, its that they are both spies, and they don’t know about each other’s separate spy careers, the only difference is they met at “the farm” and know their spouse’s real occupation. All that said, I really like Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and I like UnderCovers. Yes, they spanned the globe in the pilot, Madrid, Paris, Russia, but it worked. It was funny to see Tom Haverford’s buddy from Parks & Rec play the CIA back-up nerd. BTW Parks & Rec isn’t cancelled yet! I liked that they get to keep their “day job” as caterers. I want the next few episodes to delve out some back story, because it was just too clean and convenient for me. Shannon and I thoroughly enjoyed it! DVR Letter Grade at bottom of post!
Outsourced
We have watched the commercials all summer with the Dream Team Indian call center guy giving us his best southern dialect as he explains what grits are. And still to my mind, the actual show wasn’t as funny as those commercials. I will give it another watch or two. And I must be fair, we watched 30 Rock before we watched Outsourced, and we both laughed loudly as usual at our favorite comedy. Outsourced hardly delivered chuckle as the soft soft spoken call center girl made a sale.
DVR Report Card on the Pilots:
The Event – B
Hawaii Five-O – B+
UnderCovers – B+
Outsourced – C
Where is ABC in this new show rigmarole? I caught about half of Detroit 187, with its shocking ending, and I will give it a shot, especially on a Tuesday night. But I didn’t see the whole episode, and I’m one of those guys that needs the whole deal, to make a judgement call. Their grade is an ‘I’ for incomplete. As far as those other new shows, we weren’t interested. Am I missing something, shout it out in the comments!
I will give a rundown, at some point on all of our other DVR worthy shows, and how they are fairing. Some we have given up to Netflix, because we have either missed them, or wained in our interest a bit.
